Inthebleakfilmscapeofglasnost,TheNeedlestoodoutasablacksheepofamovie.ThemostplayfulandoffbeatoftheSovietfilmsoftheperiod,itcontrastedsharplytothemainstream,whichwasoverwhelmedwithrevisionismoftheStalinistpastandnihilisticsocialcriticism.Madein1988byayoungKazakhdirector,RashidNugmanov,freshoutofVGIK(thenationalfilmschool),TheNeedlewasapioneeringeffortinseveralways.Havingcomefromaremote,stagnantrepublicofKazakhstan,thepicturesetoffamovementthathascometobeknownasthe"KazakhNewWave."RepresentedbysuchworksasAlexanderBaranovsandBakhytKilibayevsTheThree(1988)andWomanoftheDay(1990);KilibayevsTheTick(1990);BaranovsHeandShe(1990);AbaiKarpykovsLittleFishinLove(1989);andSerikAprymovsTheLastStop(1989),theKazakhNewWavewasfortheagonizingSovietfilmofthelate1980swhattheFrenchNewWavewasforthedustyFrenchfilmofthelate1950s.TheNeedlewasthemovementsaboutdesouffle.ThefilmalsobecameamodelfortheRussianversionofpostmodernism—uninhibitedanduninformed,compensatingforthelackofculture,skill,andresourceswithmischiefandwit.AyoungmannamedMoro(playedbyViktorTsoi,thelaterocknrolllegendfromtheSt.Petersburgband"Kino")returnstohisAsiatichometownonlytofindhisexgirlfriend,Dina(MarinaSmirnova),becomingadrugaddictandhimselfbecominginvolvedinthebizarrelifeofthecitysunderworld.InanattempttosaveDina,MorotakesherawaytotheAralSea,turnedintoabarrendesertbythetimetheyarrive.ThereDinaseemscured,butbackintowneverythingstartsanew.Almostdesperate,Morodecidestofightthedrugdealers,ledbyahospitaldoctor(playedbyanotherrocknrollstar,eccentricleaderofthe"SoundofMu"bandandthefuturestarofTaxiBlues,PyotrMamonov),whenoneofthemstabshiminadesertedpark.
